Spotted Salamander

spotted salamanderThe spotted salamander is a small amphibian colored black or dark gray with two rows of yellow spots running from its head to its tail. These salamanders prefer mature, moist woodlands with access to vernal ponds for breeding. The habitat of this salamander is quickly disappearing however, making the spotted salamander rare in many parts of Michigan.

Spotted salamanders spend most of their time in underground burrows, but can sometimes be found under logs or leaf litter.
