American green treefrogs are native to southeastern parts of the United States and are not found in Michigan. Our two green treefrogs at the Nature Center were a classroom pet and have lived at the nature center for about a year. Green treefrogs are usually green in color, but can change colors based on their temperature and surroundings as well.
In the wild, they are common in small ponds, lakes and marshes as they prefer a lot of vegetation. Males can be heard on warm nights during the breeding season with its short musical trill. Here at the Nature Center, we have one male and one female green treefrog. Sometimes, usually after a misting, our male green treefrog can be heard calling throughout the building.
